New in our manufacturing toolbox: plasma surface treatment

10 September 2026

Bondus has added atmospheric plasma surface treatment to its manufacturing capabilities for polymer microfluidic devices. This cost-effective process improves surface wettability, adhesion, and cleanliness, supporting more consistent and reliable manufacturing.

In microfluidics manufacturing, surface properties can have a significant impact on the device manufacturability and performance in its application.

Therefore, Bondus has added plasma surface treatment to its toolbox: a cost-effective solution to improve surface wettability, adhesion, and cleanliness during the manufacturing of polymer devices.

Why use plasma surface treatment?
  • Wettability - Makes surfaces more hydrophilic, supporting fluid flow
  • Adhesion - Improves coating adhesion and bonding
  • Cleanliness - Removes organic contaminants at a microscopic level without physical contact

The increase in wettability and the stability of the hydrophilic property are not only material-dependent but also grade-specific. The reduction in hydrophilicity can be minimized by sealing the material in airtight pouches or under nitrogen.

Atmospheric plasma treatment at Bondus
At Bondus, we use atmospheric plasma treatment because it is cost-effective and suitable for automation and in-line production. For microfluidic and polymer-based applications, better surface control can mean more consistent and reliable manufacturing.

Polymer-to-glass bonding

2 July 2026

Bondus has expanded its bonding capabilities to combine polymers and glass in microfluidic devices where optical transparency is important. This combines the optical and chemical properties of glass with the flexibility of polymers for microstructuring and functionalisation.

For applications where optical transparency is important, Bondus has the ability to integrate glass layers in microfluidic products.

This lab-on-a-chip is a perfect example: a 140 µm thick glass cover is bonded with a COC or PMMA substrate. Bonding is performed using an adhesive specifically designed to remain optically transparent after curing.

Why polymer and glass in one device?
  • Hybrid bonding of glass to polymers creates optical windows for microscopy or imaging applications;
  • While glass is chemically inert, flat and has excellent optical characteristics, polymers can be more easily micro-structured and (bio)functionalised;
  • Glass-glass bonding requires very high temperatures. Bondus can bond glass to polymers at room temperature, keeping production simple and cost-effective.

Construction underway: Bondus expands its cleanroom space

16 June 2026

Rome wasn't built in a day. A cleanroom certainly isn't either! Once completed, our new ISO 7 cleanroom will increase Bondus' production space fivefold.

The construction of our new cleanroom has already taken a major step forward. In just two weeks, an empty concrete slab has been transformed into a large shell that will become Bondus’ new production space.

There is still plenty of work to do before the cleanroom is ready for production. The next steps include completing the interior, installing the required systems and equipment, and carrying out the necessary validation to ensure the space meets the required standards.

Why is production in a cleanroom important?
A cleanroom provides a controlled production environment where contamination and environmental conditions can be carefully managed. For Bondus, this is particularly important when manufacturing microfluidic devices and carrying out sensitive processes such as micro-dispensing.

  • ISO 7 particle cleanliness: Controlled air quality helps minimise contamination from dust and other particles during production.
  • Temperature and humidity control: Stable environmental conditions help ensure that micro-dispensing processes, including the application of coatings and biomarkers, remain repeatable and consistent.

Once completed and validated, the new cleanroom will significantly expand Bondus’ production capacity and provide additional space for scaling our manufacturing activities.

Stay up to date on the construction progress:

Expanding our material portfolio: introducing PEI

9 June 2026

Choosing the right material can make a significant difference in the performance and durability of a microfluidic device. Bondus has added PEI (polyetherimide) to its material portfolio, opening up new possibilities for applications requiring robust components and specific chemical resistance.

One of the latest additions to Bondus’ material portfolio is PEI (polyetherimide), also known as Ultem. Recognisable by its characteristic amber colour, PEI is widely used for manifolds and engineering components, but is less commonly seen in microfluidic applications.

With its high strength, hardness, and chemical resistance, PEI is an interesting option for robust microfluidic components and manifold products.

Why PEI?
Material selection is particularly important when microfluidic devices need to withstand different solvents or elevated temperatures. While COC and COP offer good chemical and temperature resistance, PEI provides a different balance of solvent compatibility.

  • COC/COP: suitable for polar solvents such as alcohols and ketones, but less suitable for non-polar solvents such as n-heptane and aromatic solvents.
  • PEI: compatible with alcohols, non-polar solvents, and most aromatic solvents, but less suitable for applications involving ketones or esters.

The right material depends on the specific fluids, operating conditions, and requirements of the application.

Looking closer: quality inspection in microfluidic manufacturing

2 June 2026

Bondus is expanding its inspection capabilities as part of its quality control in microfluidic manufacturing. With increasingly complex and miniaturised devices, detailed inspection helps verify critical features, identify deviations early, and maintain consistent quality throughout production.

Most people only see the finished microfluidic device. What they don't see is the inspection process behind it.

As microfluidic devices become more complex, inspecting the smallest features is becoming increasingly important. At Bondus, inspection is an integral part of the manufacturing process, helping to verify critical features and identify deviations before they affect the final product.

Depending on the application and production stage, Bondus uses different inspection methods to check:
  • Microchannels and features – verifying critical dimensions and geometries
  • Layer alignment – checking the positioning of different layers before and after bonding
  • Bonding quality – inspecting bonded surfaces and interfaces
  • Dimensional accuracy – measuring components against the required specifications
  • Visual quality – identifying defects or irregularities that could affect performance
By combining manufacturing with inspection throughout the process, Bondus can detect potential issues early and maintain consistent quality as projects move from prototype to series production.
